How to enable and disable test cases in TestNG

TestNG provides the feature of enabling and disabling the test cases. we will disable a group of test cases from getting executed. For instance, consider a scenario where a significant bug occurs during a feature thanks to certain tests, so we’d like to disable the test cases from being executed.

In TestNG, test cases are often disabled in two ways:

  • You can disable the test suit during a @Test annotation.
  • You can disable the test suit within the XML file.

TestNG @Test enable parameter

You can disable or exclude the test cases by using the enable attribute to the @Test annotation and assign False value to the enable attribute.

Let’s understand through an example:

package day1;

import org.testng.annotations.Test;
public class module1
{
@Test(enabled=false)
public void test1() // First test suit
{
System.out.println("Hello tecklearn!!");
}

@Test
public void test2() // Second test suit
{
System.out.println("JTP Travels");
}
}

In the above code, we created two test cases, i.e., test1() and test2(), and that we disable the primary test suit by assigning the False value to the enable attribute. On disabling the primary test suit , the sole second test suit will run.

Output

1 66

In the above output, we observe that only the second test suit run with none failure.

Disable the enable attribute within the XML file.

Step1: Till now, we’ve created the test cases of the private loan department.

module1.java

package day1;
import org.testng.annotations.Test;
public class module1
{
@Test
public void test1()
{
System.out.println("Hello tecklearn!!");
}

@Test
public void test2()
{
System.out.println("JTP Travels");
}
}

module2.java

package day1;
import org.testng.annotations.Test;
public class module2
{
@Test
public void WebLoginCarLoan()
{
System.out.println("WebLoginCarLoan");
}

@Test
public void MobileLoginCarLoan()
{
System.out.println("MobileLoginCarLoan");
}

@Test
public void APILoginCarLoan()
{
System.out.println("APILoginCarLoan");
}
}

module1.java contains the test cases of private loan while module2.java contains the test cases of a automobile loan .

Step 2: If we would like to disable the MobileLoginCarLoan test suit in automobile loan module, then we’d like to feature the tag in xml file which has access to all or any the methods of a category .

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE suite SYSTEM "http://testng.org/testng-1.0.dtd">
<!-- Test -->
<!-- Suite -->

Step 3: Run the testng.xml file. Right click on the testng.xml file, and move the cursor down, you’ll see the Run As then click on the 1 TestNG Suite.

1 66

Output

3 64

4 59

5 54

In the above output, we observe that each one the test suit s run successfully except the test case “MobileLoginCarLoan” which we’ve excluded.

Note: Suppose we’ve multiple test cases and you would like to incorporate just one or two test cases, in such situation, we use tag. If we use the tag, then it becomes very tedious to exclude all the test cases.

Let’s understand through an example of tag.

test.java file

package day1;
import org.testng.annotations.Test;
public class test
{
@Test
public void test1()
{
System.out.println("test1");
}

@Test
public void test2()
{
System.out.println("test2");
}

@Test
public void test3()
{
System.out.println("test3");
}

@Test
public void test4()
{
System.out.println("test3");
}
}

testng.xml file

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE suite SYSTEM "http://testng.org/testng-1.0.dtd">
<!-- Test -->
<!-- Suite -->

Output

6 45

In the above output, we observe that just one test suit is running, i.e., test3 as we’ve included only test3 in tag in an XML file.
