Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in Qlik Sense

KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator which are the measure values used as performance trackers. We use KPIs to point the present state of an enterprise functioning by displaying calculated values like average sales, maximum sales, minimum sales, total sales etc. you’ll apply conditional colors and symbols to form them more dynamic and indicative of the performance state they’re showing. as an example , you’ll provides a red color to a lower value, symbolize it with a downward arrow, or use green color for a better value etc. you’ll also set a variety and limit for the values. In Qlik Sense, you’ll add such KPIs on the sheet as distinct visualizations which we will handle and edit separately.

Create KPI Visualization in Qlik Sense

In order to make a KPI visualization in Qlik Sense, follow the steps given below.
Step 1: Open the editor of the sheet of the appliance during which you would like to make a KPI visualization. The editor is opened, from the edit option present on the toolbar.
Step 2: Select the choice KPI (from the Assets Panel) and add it to the editing grid at the middle by dragging and dropping.

Step 3: Add a measure for the KPI. You add more measures from the properties panel later.

Next, you’ll add an aggregation type to the values of the chosen field/measure.

Step 4: Once you’re through with selecting and adjusting all the various aspects of it. The KPI are going to be displayed on the editor instantly. Click done to bring it on the sheet.

The KPI shown above shows two calculations, i.e. monetary value and maximum product cost with relevant symbols aside them.

Properties of Qlik Sense KPI

From the properties panel present at the proper of the editor, you’ll manage different aspects of the KPI visualization and make it consistent with your requirement.

i. Data
From the info tab, you’ll add measures for first and second KPI. you’ll edit an expression, add a label, set the amount formatting for the calculated values. you’ll add up to 2 measures only.

In this section, you’ll use the info handling choice to apply certain display conditions on the info . The KPIs are only displayed if the applied condition holds true.

Using Data Handling Options for Add-ons
iii. Appearance
The appearance section contains all the setting associated with the looks of the KPIs.
The first section is that the General section has options for showing or hiding titles or details.

The Presentation section in Qlik Sense KPI gives you options to regulate the alignment of the KPI information, font size. you’ll also link the KPI to other sheets within the app.

From the colours section, you set the coloring criteria for the KPIs. you’ll add a color condition and associate a logo thereto . Also, you’ll add value limits in KPIs which are shown during a certain color up until that limit then changes the colour when gone beyond the limit.

4. Advantages and limitations of using KPIs

One major limitation of the KPIs is that you simply can only have a generalized results of the performance through values and a limited set of symbols. If you would like a more clear and relative representation of performance indicators, then you’ll choose using gauge charts. However, a clear advantage is that KPIs provide a fast and to the purpose representation of the performance results using which you’ll reach to conclusions in your analysis easily on how the enterprise has performed over a particular period.
